Welcome back!
Okay... So here is what's going on this week:Monday: We are going to spend class time updating after the Thanksgiving holiday on a few things and then I will lecture on the Mongols (story time!). Notes should be available to you in your Class Notes tab in OneNote, but the PowerPoint is also available to you in the Period 3 folder of Schoology.
Friday: Today we are going to tie-up our study of the Post-Classical Era by studying the environmental changes that occur during this era as a result of migration, whether it be of people or other forces. This will include different activities like source work and SAQ Practice.
Bonus Thanksgiving post - YAY! This is just to refresh you on the assignments you have to do over Thanksgiving break. Remember, there are three total and two of which you have to submit the assignment in Schoology. Assignment 1: The Crusades are an incredibly important conflict that lasts for a large part of the Post-Classical Era, with ramifications that last the rest of history. Khan Academy has given us some great resource videos on what they are and their impact, short- and long-term! Watch the three Crusades videos and take notes over them to better understand how they began, major events within and the impact of the conflict. You can see them here below!
Assignment 2: We've literally been waiting for them to get here... Thanks, John Green! It's finally time to watch our Crash Course on (Wait for it...) The Mongols! You need to watch the video and answer the questions that accompany it. Turn in your completed document into the dropbox in Schoology. The video is below, as well! Assignment 3: Last one... What's funny is that despite the rampage of the Mongols across China and Eurasia, one group will actually use the presence of the Mongols to expand and join the world stage: Russia. You'll watch the Crash Course video on Russia, the Kievan Rus and the Mongols while answering the accompanying questions. Submit the completed document to the dropbox in Schoology. You can find the video below. All of the assignments are due Monday, November 27th at 11:59 PM.Thanksgiving Break is approaching fast - But there is still work to be done. Let's review what's coming up this week AND the work you'll be assigned over the break to complete.
Tuesday: It's Debate Day! Students will enter class and draw which "team" they are participating in the Justinian Debate with - either the affirmative team, the negative team, or the jury. After the debate is done, students will have a quick exit ticket to complete via Google Forms to reflect on what they learned and their own argument for the debate.
Wednesday: Today's class will be spent doing some Peer Reviews and Edits of our DBQ we wrote last Thursday. Students will highlight, add comments and suggestions to a peer's essay, and share them with the student before it is turned in for me to grade. Please make sure you have your highlighters with you to use for this activity.
Thursday: Today in class we will be working on some guided notes for the Middle Ages in Europe, specifically Feudalism/Manorialism, the Byzantine Empire, and the Division of Christianity.
Friday: Classes today will be working on an activity titled the "Crusades Dinner Party" - students will research key members/leaders of the Crusades and try to place/arrange a successful dinner party where all of these members would be invited it. This simulation is important for not only recognizing major figures/leaders of the Crusades, and the disagreements that are apart of the conflict, but students will be practicing researching skills and problem-solving/critical thinking skills.
In order to keep our minds sharp, and not lose ground in our study, students have three assignments to work on over the holiday break. These assignments and their materials are all located in one folder in Schoology for easy access:
It's DBQ Week!Every day this week (except for Friday) we'll be prepping or writing your first Document-Based Question (DBQ) Essay on THURSDAY!. I KNOW you guys can do this and we'll do it together so no freaking out! Here is your breakdown for the week so you can be best prepared:Monday: Today starts our big focus on writing with an activity on Point of View. NO SPOILERS! because after we do it, and practice with other documents, you'll feel a lot better about finding a document's point of view. You will receive your prompt and documents that we are going to writing over later this week today as well.
Tuesday: Today we are going to be discussing the DBQ Rubric and its different components. This includes Outside Information, Point of View, Contextualization, etc. If time, we will discuss the documents and our prompt (at minimum, the documents that are most confusing).
Wednesday: Today is Planning Day - we will work together to lay out our essay during class using a handy outline and our documents. This is our "putting it all together" day, so to speak, before you write tomorrow.
Thursday: Today is WRITING DAY! You get to the whole class period to write your essay. Be sure to bring some notebook paper and a PEN! All essays must be turned in by the end of the period.
Friday: We are going to start preparing for a debate today over one of Byzantium's most famous (or infamous...) rulers - Justinian. You guys are going to start preparing to debate Justinian’s legacy and whether he successfully revives the glory of the old Roman Empire during the Byzantine Empire.
See the schedule below if you need some extra help before your DBQ:
