Big week ahead!Quick reminder! Last week, students received a white sheet detailing how Klein Oak has the opportunity to participate in a Pilot Program with CollegeBoard. Students will be asked to participate in surveys and need to have this form completed and returned by Wednesday, September 27th. Please make sure this is brought back to me on that day. If you are taking another AP Course and have turned the form in with that teacher, you do not have to turn it in with me again.
Here's your breakdown of the week coming up. Our big focus is our first LEQ. :o Monday: Today classes will finish their discussion on Classical Empires and a few of the early religions. Once finished, there's a quick 15-question Kahoot to recap and review some information from Period 1 and Period 2. Homework: In order to make the best use of our time for later this week, we are going to stack our reading toward the front end of the week. I know you guys can do it. So tonight your reading comes first from Chapter 3, the section on "India". The second reading comes from Chapter 5, the section called "Case of Caste". Tuesday: QUIZ DAY! Anything from Period 1 and Period 2 is fair game. We'll only have 20 minutes to complete the quiz (get used to time limits on multiple choice sections like on the AP Exam). After, we will start to go through how to write and organize LEQ Essays, since we are going to write our first one on Thursday. Homework: One more heavy day of reading then some time off.. Chapter 4, read the section titled "Cultural Traditions of India" and the section titled "Christianity with Buddhist Comparisons". Wednesday: Today is solely devoted to breaking down our prompt and planning out our essay! This includes creating a basic outline together with a proper thesis statement, along with getting some time on your own to brainstorm and tweak your outline. Homework: Prep for your essay tomorrow! This is a major grade! Thursday: ESSAY DAY! You will come into class, take a seat (our desks will be in rows) starting on Tuesday. We'll go back to our tables on Monday. Homework: NONE! Day off! WHOO! Friday: Today we're going to peer evaluate and self-evaluate our writing. Before today, please pick up sets of highlighters (preferably ones with the colors, yellow/orange/pink/green/blue/purple)! Homework: Back to reading, this week, read from Chapter 6, the section "Continental Comparisons". You guys are awesome!I have to brag and compliment you on the amazing work you have done these past two weeks. After returning from our break with Hurricane Harvey, you have really committed to class and gotten right back into the swing of things. With readings at home and the project we started this week, you guys are getting into the thick of class - so keep it up! Here's a breakdown of what you can expect from class this week and homework to plan ahead for. Please remember all readings can be gotten from your online textbook, or PDFs can be found in Schoology. Monday: Today is the last class day you and your group have to work on your Vote for Your Empire project. Remember, the goal of your group is to create a "campaign" as to why your assigned empire is better than the rest, and the person you have to convince is ME! If you need a reminder on the instructions, check Schoology, your OneNote digital notebook, or you can find the file below. The Rubric is also posted to Schoology. Remember that at the end of this project you will have to complete a peer evaluation of your group members performance, including your own. This will be a separate daily grade. Homework: Make sure your project is reading, number one! Then, you'll start reading about the Roman Empire and China's Classical dynasties. This section is called "Comparing Empires: Rome and China" in Chapter 3. STOP at "Consolidating Empires". Tuesday: Today we start our presentations! We will try to accomplish have 4 groups one day, and 3 another. Each empire will present their project, our question period for each will take place at the end from our "mudslingers", then I will talk about each empire with reference to a PERSIAN Chart. Each student will have a copy of that chart sent to them via OneNote to take notes on. Homework: Tonight your reading comes from Chapter 3 again. This time you will start reading at "Consolidating the Roman and Chinese Empires" and stop after reading through "The Collapse of Empires". It's always a good idea to take notes during these readings!!! Wednesday: Today we finish our presentations! We will try to accomplish have 4 groups the first day, and 3 today. Each empire will present their project, our question period for each will take place at the end from our "mudslingers", then I will talk about each empire with reference to a PERSIAN Chart. Each student will have a copy of that chart sent to them via OneNote to take notes on. Homework: Tonight your reading comes from Chapter 5. You will start your reading with the section called "State and Society in China", and stop when you reach the section about "Class and Caste in India." The second part of your reading tonight is to read the section called "Slavery in Rome", and stop at "Comparing Patriarchies". NOTE: You have already read Comparing Patriarchies, and probably saw there was information about China in that section. A good idea would be to skim over it and review that information about society in China. Thursday: Now that we have covered our Classical Empires (whoo!) we are now moving to the foundations of early religion. You have already started reading about a few of these already last week, and today we're going to dig into the foundational beliefs and origins of each. Homework: Tonight's reading is one you will have some extra time for as it is chalk full of important info. Your reading will be from Chapter 4, the section called "China and the Search for Order". Stop reading at the section titled "Cultural Traditions of Classical India". Friday: Today we are going to work on our skill of contextualization with Early Religions. Students will work in groups to better understand the beginnings of early religions by looking at surrounding/background information for each. This includes Social Context, Political Context, and other areas. Homework: This weekend make sure you have spent time reading from Chapter 4, "China and the Search for Order". This might be a good time to catch up on any other reading/notes you may have fallen behind on. :) This Monday you will also be receiving a sheet that needs to be signed by parents about the Pilot Program our class has the opportunity to participate in. Please see the flyer below for more information and please bring back the white paper signed as soon as possible.
Moving right along, here are some important things to know about this week.
Monday: Today we have tablet rollout! Our class period will be spent doing things like adding Dyknow, our digital notebook through OneNote, and other "techy" tasks that need to be completed. NO HOMEWORK TONIGHT. Tuesday: Most classes still need some extra time to finish up our AP Style short answer questions, so that is what we will do today. If you want to refresh on SAQs and how to write them, the PowerPoint is available on Schoology. Homework: Today starts our first night of reading. The section you are responsible for is "Persia and Greece". Students can use their digital textbook via Schoology. Also, the file for this reading can be found on Schoology. Take notes via your new digital notebook via OneNote. Wednesday: Today we are beginning Period 2, or what we call the Classical Period. This will consist of a discussion about how we perceive "empires" and the model we will use to define and analyze different empires during this period of history. Homework: Reading tonight but skip ahead and read the section "Contrasting Patriarchies" in Chapter 5. Thursday: We are introducing our first project of the year today. The "Vote for your Empire" project allows students to analyze different traits of Classical Empires in groups. This project will be due on September 19. Between today and its due date, students will have the period to work together. Homework: Reading tonight. Go to Chapter 3 and read the section "Collision: Greco-Persian Wars". Friday: Today will be spent working on our "Vote for Your Empire" Project in groups. Homework: Reading. Go to Chapter 4 and read "Zoroastrianism, Judaism & Greek Rational Knowledge". Welcome back! After some delay, we are finally ready to pick up where we left off learning about the Foundations Period. Remember, before our break we had finished talking about the Paleolithic and Neolithic Period. If you need a refresher on these, check out the previous post from Hurricane Harvey Week that has a lot of videos, readings, and podcasts you can use to review. Looking ahead at this week, here's what you guys can expect:
Links for the videos you are assigned for homework are below as well as digital copies of the questions just in case you need them.
Have a great week, guys! We all missed you!
